Change and improve the drain hose of a dishwasher

It is an unfortunate fact that many manufacturers skimp on the quality of the drain hose in order to drive down the overall price of the machine. Consumers have become accustomed to the low-quality polyethylene (PE) hoses. Therefore, similar miserable quality is often repurchased when changing. Better hose is only marginally more expensive.

Polyethylene is a relatively simple plastic

Corrugated hoses with a ribbed structure, some of which can be pulled out, are considered a frequent standard. In the usual designs tend to crack at your ribs when they become brittle. For high-quality dishwashers, which have a long life expectancy, it is worth considering a better waste hose.

Very high quality products are available in the garden watering hose sector. Since the stress of movement and torsion is incomparably lower with a firmly and correctly laid drain hose on the dishwasher, even inexpensive garden hoses can be an ideal alternative to PE plastic.

Standard dimensions in cross-section and inner diameter respectively

There is a wide range of garden hoses with the size of three-quarters of an inch (19.05 millimeters). These hoses can be easily connected to most freestanding dishwashers. Somewhat smaller selection, but still sufficient, there is for the inner diameter 21 millimeters.

At the following popular and renowned manufacturers of dishwashers, the cross-sections 19 or 22 millimeters at the connection piece and as the capacity of the hose volume are common: AEG, Balay, Bauknecht, Beko, Blomberg, Bomann, Bosch, Constructa, Electrolux, Gaggenau, Gorenje, Ikea, Lloyds, Miele, Neckermann, Neff, Philips, Privileg, Quelle, Samsung, Siemens, Whirlpool, Zanker and Zanussi.

Foreign appliances and some manufacturers specify the inside diameter in inches. The following common inner diameters for hoses with normal wall thickness (three to five millimeters) are common:

3/4 inch = DN20 = 19.05 millimeters
1/2 inch = DN15 = 21.3 millimeters

A hose is defined in three construction layers:

  • The hose core is the inner “tube” that comes into contact with the wastewater
  • The hose cover is the outer layer of the hose, which plays a subordinate role in the case of hidden wastewater discharge
  • The insert in between is called the pressure carrier and is usually made of plastic or textile fabric

Garden hoses are offered with cross weave and three to five layers or as rubber hose with two layers with or without textile fabric insert, often by the meter.

At nitrile rubber you have the highest quality hose material, which, however, for the drain on a dishwasher rather dispensable luxury.
